and limbs are bars of iron.
His strength is in his loins,
his power in the muscles of his belly.
He lies beneath the lotus plants,
the Jordan River confident
to pour into his mouth.
No hook pierces his nose.
No eye can capture him.
Only his Maker can draw the sword against him.

The medieval Jewish manuscripts knew him —
the Ambrosiana Bible of 1236,
the Northern French Miscellany of 1277,
the Leipzig Mahzor of 1310 —
all depicted him the same way.
A massive red ox with golden horns.
Lying still. Sovereign. Unafraid.

He does not hunt. He does not rage.
Once a year on the summer solstice
he releases a single roar —
and every predator on earth trembles
and is subdued for the full year.
He never roars again until the next solstice.
He doesn't need to.

The most powerful creature on earth
who has never once needed to prove it.

Since the fifth day of creation
he has been lying in this marsh.
Lotus flowers at his feet.
A thousand mountains behind him.
The Jordan River at his hooves.
Waiting.
